What is a Universal Donor & Recipient?

 Universal Donor and Recipient

There are 4 types of blood:

  • Type A                                Type B
  • Type AB                             Type O

Universal Donor

-A universal blood donor is a blood type that can be donated to any type of blood.

The rarest blood type, O negative is considered to be a universal donor throughout the world. It can be donated to any person as it has no antigens. No antigens means that antibodies will not attack. Thus, it is compatible with all other blood types.

But now, some experts believe that this isn't true. They believe that O negative might have antibodies that can cause a serious reaction during blood transfusions.

What is the rhesus (Rh) factor?

The rhesus factor refers to the red blood cell antigen in the body's blood. If you have the antigen, then you are Rh+. If you don't, then you are Rh-.

Universal Recipient

-A universal recipient is a blood type that can receive a blood transfusion of any of the other blood types safely.

Blood group type AB+ is considered as the universal recipient. People with this blood group can receive any blood type of either Rh factor. Blood type AB+, do not make antibodies to any of the blood types. Thus, they can receive any blood type (A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+ or AB-).

But it is always preferred to receive blood from the same blood group.
